An advanced metocean data contract to secure the Nordlicht 1 & 2 offshore wind farm project with Vattenfall

CLS, a global pioneer in Earth observation and environmental intelligence, has been awarded a three-year contract by Vattenfall, one of Europe’s leading renewable energy producers, to deliver strategic metocean data throughout the construction phase of the Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2 offshore wind farms, located off the German coast.

With a combined capacity of over 1.6 GW, Nordlicht 1 and 2 will become Germany’s largest offshore wind complex and one of the most significant in Europe. Once operational, the two sites will generate clean electricity, which corresponds to the electricity demand of up to 1.6 million German households, directly contributing to the European Union’s renewable energy and climate goals.

Vattenfall, a driving force in Europe’s clean energy transition

With more than a century of experience, Vattenfall stands today as a key player in Europe’s energy transformation. Operating across Northern and Central Europe, the company’s mission is clear: to to drive the transition to fossil-free energy and thus move society forward.

Vattenfall’s strong portfolio, including offshore and onshore wind, solar, and hydroelectric power, positions it at the forefront of Europe’s decarbonization efforts.

The Nordlicht 1 and 2 projects, located in the German North Sea, perfectly embody this ambition. Combining technological innovation, operational excellence, and environmental responsibility, Vattenfall is once again pushing the boundaries of offshore engineering.

At the heart of the project, CLS will deploy a suite of advanced metocean systems, integrating in situ instrumentation, real-time transmission technology, and data analytics tools.

These systems will continuously provide high-precision measurements of waves and currents supporting safe and efficient operations throughout construction. This data helps identify optimal weather windows, reduce operational risks, and support decision-making for complex offshore operations.

Richard Liptrot, Metocean Business Development Manager, added: “This offshore wind farm contract with Vattenfall perfectly illustrates the strategic value of our metocean expertise. We’re proud to contribute to one of Europe’s most ambitious renewable energy developments and look forward to working together with Vattenfall on this project.”

A partnership driving safe and sustainable offshore energy

By combining Vattenfall’s renewable energy leadership with CLS’s environmental and oceanographic expertise, this collaboration highlights how technology and sustainability can go hand in hand.
