CLS Appointed as Technical Consultants for National Coastal Monitoring Programme
- August 4, 2025
- Category: Press Release

CLS, a global leader in Earth observation and maritime monitoring, has been selected by the Channel Coastal Observatory (CCO) as technical consultant to the National Network of Regional Coastal Monitoring Programmes (NNRCMP) in the United Kingdom.
This appointment marks a significant step in the development of an updated long-term strategy for the RCMP’s coastal buoy network, a key asset for coastal resilience and public safety across the UK.
Strategic Support for a National Asset
The UK’s coastal buoy network forms a critical foundation for metocean data collection, supporting flood forecasting, coastal erosion monitoring, and emergency response.
As the programme evolves to meet new environmental and operational challenges, CLS will bring its technical expertise to help shape the next phase of this infrastructure, ensuring robustness, data quality, and long-term value.
CLS will be working together with CCO on the development of the long-term strategy for the wave buoy network.
Under this engagement, CLS will contribute to:
- Assessing the performance and architecture of the current buoy network;
- Identifying pathways to modernisation and optimisation;
- Supporting data integration and continuity across the network.
Expertise in Support of Coastal Risk Management
With decades of experience in oceanographic monitoring, satellite-derived environmental intelligence, and offshore metocean campaigns, CLS is uniquely positioned to guide the evolution of observational systems at national scale.
The project will be supported from CLS UK, reinforcing the Group’s presence and engagement in the British offshore and coastal sector.
Richard Liptrot, Metocean Business Development Manager at CLS UK, commented:
“We are honoured that CLS has been selected to support the NNRCMP buoy network, which plays a vital role in safeguarding the resilience and safety of the UK coastline. Our team is excited to contribute to a programme of such national importance.”

Mauricio Fragoso, Director of Energy & Infrastructure at CLS Group, added:
“Our teams of oceanographers, instrumentation engineers and data scientists are ready to support both the strategic and operational objectives of the NNRCMP. We are proud of being selected by such an important Institution at UK and International levels. ”
Dr Thomas Dhoop, Programme Manager at the Channel Coastal Observatory, added:
“The NNRCMP’s wave buoy network has delivered vital data for over two decades, underpinning the nation’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) strategy. This strategic review is about futureproofing that capability in making the network more efficient, resilient, and ready for the next generation of challenges. We look forward to working closely with CLS to ensure the long-term success of this national asset.”
